Founded in 1868, the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) is an international Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) working to promote an understanding of the nature and working of the Commonwealth, and of the factors which shape the lives of its peoples and the policies of its governments. The RCS is supported by a worldwide membership of over 10,000, with self-governing branches, honorary representatives and affiliated organisations in over 53 countries and territories.
Through its educational, youth and outreach programmes, the Royal Commonwealth Society seeks to encourage young people to develop their skills and, with an increased understanding of their role as global citizens, to engage with challenges facing the international community. It aims to bring alive the fundamental principles of the modern Commonwealth – tolerance, diversity, freedom, justice, democracy, human rights and sustainable development – to a generation living in an increasingly interconnected world.
Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi
The Commonwealth Games is held every four years. The last Games were held in Melbourne, in 2006. The next Games will be held in Delhi in 2010. The Commonwealth Games known as the Friendly Games sees 71 countries compete over a two week period. In 2006 5,766 athletes and officials competed in 16 sports.
In the future there will be 17 sports including up to 4 team sports. Each edition of the Games will include 10 core sports, Athletics, Swimming, Badminton, Boxing, Hockey, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby Sevens, Squash, Weightlifting.
Cardiff wins bid to host CLGF's 2011 conference
Cardiff has won the honour of hosting a major international summit in 2011 which will be attended by heads of government and senior local government decision-makers from across the Commonwealth.
